Does Cigarette Smoking Affect Pets

Picture
You probably can remember times when it was allowed to smoke cigarettes in bars and other public places. It seemed like all of the sudden this secondhand smoke debate started and smokers were banished to stand in the rain and wind.

Times are Changin'

I was going through at least a pack of cigarettes a day and quitting smoking was not what I considered seriously at that moment so initial reaction was that this is discrimination. Not smelling of cigarettes quickly changed my stance and when I looked into it – secondhand smoke is dangerous.

You Smoke - Your Pets Smoke Too

Next logical question was does cigarette smoking affect pets. At that time I had a dog. I used to smoke in car and in apartment so effect of secondhand smoke on my pet is an important issue because at least to me he was not my pet but my good friend.

Pets have same organs as you do and it is natural that cigarette smoke has the same destructive effect on them as it does on people.

Smoking cigarettes is the leading cause of lung cancer and if you think that your smoking does not affect your pets you are deceiving yourself. 1 Be honest – you know that cigarette smoke is very harmful to you and everyone around you including your pets.

So, you can put that as another reason for you to quit smoking cigarettes.

Cigarette Smoke is Poison for Your Pets

Let’s look at how cigarette smoke affects pets. Cigarette smoke affects pets actually in exactly the same way it does you – it increases the risk of lung cancer and cancers of whole breathing system.

Cigarette smoke contains huge quantities of various chemicals and particles. When your cat or dog is breathing in this smoke it exposes organs to increased risk of cancer. It has been observed that pets whose owners are smokers are twice as likely to develop cancer as pets of nonsmokers. 2
Every time you light up a cigarette you hurt not only yourself but your beloved dog, cat or other pet as well. Quitting smoking would decrease the risk of developing cancer of breathing system to both of you.

Cat Owners Behave

Cat owners should be actually even more aware of the affect their cigarette smoking is having on their pet because cats love to groom themselves and guess what they are ingesting.

All those chemicals that are released when you are smoking are not floating around indefinitely. They settle down so it’s no wonder that cats whose owners are smokers are twice as likely to develop Feline Lymphoma, a serious cancer of the blood and immune system. 2

Truth is Hard to Swallow

Another risk for pets is your pet accidentally eating a cigarette.

Even not lit cigarette poses a big risk. I used to just throw a pack on the table and sometimes have loose cigarettes lying around. Stop doing that right away. You can quit smoking a bit later but stop leaving cigarettes lying around.

Cigarettes are dangerous for two reasons – they are a choking hazard and they are highly toxic. This includes cigarette butts.

Especially if you have a child- keep your cigarettes and cigarette butts out of reach.

If you keep birds or other pets and think that this doesn’t bother you – you are very wrong.

Cigarette Smoke is Stressing Your Pets Out

Birds suffer from cigarette smoke very severely. Birds need huge amounts of air because they are flying and as such they filter the smoke even quicker than us or cats and dogs.

Another important thing you need to consider is stress your smoking is causing your pet. Pets are animals and they are hardwired to fear the smoke. In the wild if they smell the smoke they get the hell out and this instinct is still intact.

So imagine what your pet thinks and feels when he senses smoke constantly. If you want to feel the same thing just imagine your fire alarm going off every time you go for a smoke.

We love our pets and we want them to be happy and healthy. You quitting smoking cigarettes will help not only your, your family but also your pets health.
