Is Smoking And Anxiety Connected? Does Smoking Cause Anxiety?

Picture
Research into smoking and stress has shown that instead of helping people to relax, smoking actually increases anxiety and tension. 1

Nicotine creates an immediate sense of relaxation so people smoke in the belief that it reduces stress and anxiety. This feeling of relaxation is temporary and soon gives way to withdrawal symptoms and increased cravings. 2

Smoking reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms, which are similar to the symptoms of anxiety, but it does not reduce anxiety or deal with the underlying causes.

Smoking does the exact opposite of what you think it does. You are not getting a calming relief, you are not getting increasing your concentration or decreasing the stress. 2

What you were experiencing before lighting up that cigarette were symptoms of withdrawal. Nicotine has it's effect for a very short period of time and right away you start feeling all the great feelings of withdrawal.

Nicotine is a cycle of misery as you smoke to stop the withdrawal symptoms but they start right away so you smoke again and so on.

If you want to quit smoking you need to clearly understand this circle and the fact cigarette doesn't provide not a single positive effect. 1

Cigarette that you think "calms you" is actually very temporarily solving the problem it caused.
