Calling a cigarette “light” is like saying that if you are going to drink and drive you will be safer if you got drunk on beer. “Light” cigarettes have exactly the same effect on your health and keep you hooked like any other cigarette. 2

One of the stupidest things I ever did was trying to quit by switching to “light” cigarettes. Once when I was still a smoker I decided to quit and an advice I found was to switch to cigarettes with less nicotine.

Trying to Trick Yourself


Imagine that your friend has a drinking problem and he comes to you for help and your advice to him is – switch to beer and wine. No more vodka or whisky for you but beer is okay.  
 
This is ridiculous but if you wish hard enough it does make some sort of sense. The idea is to decrease dependency by decreasing the amount of nicotine you get. I don’t think that this will be shock to you but this doesn’t work at all.

You are Strong Enough to Eliminate Nicotine Addiction

Let’s get this out of the way first – nicotine addiction is not even close to heroin addiction. Help is welcome but substitute therapy? Trust me - you don't need it.
 
Smoking does cause addiction but it’s “light” addiction if we compare it to drugs. Switching to “light” cigarettes has completely no effect because effects of nicotine stop as soon as you are done smoking a cigarette. Other chemicals do stick around and have their merry time messing with your body and mind but nicotine does it’s dirty job quickly and leaves.

Quit Smoking Cigarettes Quickly - Don't Unnecessarily Prolong the Process  
 
Smoking is a self-sustaining circle of misery and the only way to quit smoking is to eliminate nicotine from your life. Depending on a person it takes only 1 to 10 days for nicotine to be completely out of your system. On average already by day 3 your body will be free of nicotine. 2
 
Advice to switch to “lights” or use other nicotine containing products is like saying drunk to sober up by drinking few beers.

"Light" is a Meaningless Marketing Term

"Light" cigarettes by definition are the most ridiculously evil product tobacco companies have created. The whole idea is to make cigarettes more attractive to women and health conscious people.
 
Light yogurt and other “light” products are all the same – these are just marketing tricks. “Light” doesn’t mean anything. 3
 
How can you make “light” cigarette? What does “light” cigarette actually mean? Cigarette manufacturers just slap on additional section of filter and this should make cigarette smoke contain less tar and nicotine.
 
Fun fact you might not know is that filters are basically useless past half a cigarette. By that point filter is burnt and clogged so no matter what kind of cigarette you are smoking once you are past middle of the cigarette you are breathing in significantly larger quantities of all stuff cigarette has to offer your lungs.
 
It's very simple. If you want to stop being a slave to a cigarette just quit smoking and eliminate nicotine from your life. 
Big Tobacco is Manipulating You

​This is not something new. Tobacco companies were under pressure for long time so light cigarettes were introduced to give a "healthier" option for smokers who were growing more concerned about the effects of their addiction.

Here is a CBS video from 1983 "Smoking: The myth of the light cigarette" which discusses light cigarettes for what they truly are - a scam trying to deceive people who are concerned about their health.

The only way to truly protect your health is to quit smoking cigarettes and eliminate nicotine addiction from your life.
